Clifton Water District Press Release
Clifton Water District Announces Temporary Drought Rates and Urges Community-Wide Water Conservation
Clifton, Colorado — May 27, 2026 — The Clifton Water District Board of Directors has approved the implementation of temporary water conservation (drought) rates in response to ongoing drought conditions affecting the region. The new rates will take effect in June and will be reflected in monthly customer billings beginning in July.
This decision follows careful consideration and reflects the District’s commitment to maintaining reliable water service while addressing increasingly limited water resources.
The purpose of the adjusted rate structure is to encourage responsible water use across the community. There will be no change to the minimum monthly billing for the first 3,000 gallons of water. However, customers whose usage exceeds this baseline can expect an increase in their monthly bill, reinforcing the importance of conserving water whenever possible.
These measures are designed not only to protect our current water supply but also to ensure long-term sustainability. We understand that rate adjustments can be challenging, but prudent water use is critical during this time.
The drought conditions impacting Colorado have been severe, marked by significantly below-average snowpack, reduced stream flows, and higher-than-normal temperatures. These factors have placed increasing pressure on water systems throughout the Grand Valley and across the Western Slope. Local water providers are actively collaborating to assess current conditions and develop strategies to manage supply as the region approaches peak seasonal demand.
Several irrigation providers have already introduced restrictions, with the potential for additional measures in the coming months. In this context, individual and collective conservation efforts are essential.
The District emphasizes that these drought rates are intended to be temporary and will remain in place only until watershed conditions show meaningful improvement.
A Community Call to Action
The Clifton Water District urges all customers to take immediate steps to reduce water usage wherever possible. Small changes—such as limiting outdoor watering, repairing leaks, and using water-efficient appliances—can collectively make a significant impact on preserving the region’s water supply.
Water is one of the community’s most vital resources, and its protection requires a shared commitment. By working together, Clifton residents can help ensure that safe and reliable water remains available for essential needs now and in the future.
